A deadline and a useful reminder are not the same thing
“Return the form by Wednesday” tells you the school's deadline. It does not tell you when your family will have a quiet moment to find it, sign it, and put it in the bag.
A reminder is more useful when it leaves time to act. Think about the action itself: paying online might take a few minutes, while finding a costume could take a few days. Choose preparation times that fit your family, not just the event date.
Make the requirement, the preparation, and the owner clear
Sports Day is Friday 16 October. Return the consent form by Wednesday 14 October. Children need trainers, a named water bottle, and a sun hat. Collection is at the usual time.

Tuesday evening, Thursday evening, and the morning bag check are planning choices, not deadlines stated by the school. “Usual time” needs to be checked against the family's known arrangements; this example supplies no pickup time.
Give the task to someone, not just everyone
